Families & Relationships
Are you concerned about your ability to…
… be an effective parent?
… form a secure attachment with your child?
… maintain healthy family relationships?
… cope with divorce?
… talk to you children in a voice and manner that they’ll listen to?
… handle the effects of stress on your family?
… curb the number of arguments in the home?
… communicate better with family members?
Are you seeking help to strengthen your family bonds?
Solid family relationships are essential ingredients to psychological health and well-being. When issues arise, regardless of whether they are viewed as ‘individual’ or ‘family’ problems, the solution often involves the family unit. Below are just a few representative areas of concern that family therapy can help address:
Parenting
It may very well be the most difficult job in the world, yet when it comes to parenting there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach. Part of being a good parent means being flexible and creative, yet despite our individuality some basic needs are universal. All children need emotional understanding, compassion, affection, encouragement, consistency and limits. These are the fundamental building blocks that allow you to tackle many of the parenting challenges that you face.
Relationships
Relationships take work and time – the more you invest the more you get back. When relationships get damaged, you can take steps to repair trust and rebuild a connection. Healthy family relationships take commitment and a willingness to adapt and change as a team.
Separation and Divorce
For many children, separation and divorce can be stressful, sad and confusing regardless of their age. Kids may feel uncertain about what life will be like, angry at the prospect of parents splitting up, and scared or worried about who will look after them. Parents can make the process and its effects less painful for their children by providing stability in the home; attending to the children’s emotional needs with a reassuring, positive attitude; and learning to communicate and parent as a team despite existing conflict.
What are our next steps?
